performancebased work statementi. general information a. introduction. radiocarbon 14c dating of fossil material is a key aspect of geoscience, particularly during the holocene epoch e. g. , the last 11, 500 years. this process uses the natural radioactive decay of 14c to 12c in preserved organic matter as a geochronometer for determining the age of deposition of geological units. the analysis of 14c decay is the basis for constructing an age scale for a geological record, and thus is one of the most important analyses performed in marine sedimentary stratigraphy. b. background. samples from the marine sediment cores collected offshore of northern california, oregon and washington are being used to refine the marine turbidite record of earthquake recurrence along the cascadia subduction zone. these data are a critical component of usgs national seismic hazard maps, which provide hazard and risk assessment to millions of people in population centers in the pacific northwest. this task is fully within the purvie
