The vendor must be an analytical laboratory accredited by NELAP, A2LA, or EMLAP and demonstrate proficiency in the CDC Environmental Legionella Isolation Techniques Evaluation (ELITE) program. Personnel performing sampling must have appropriate training and experience.

Legionella samples must be cultured quantitatively; PCR testing is not permitted. Serotyping is required for positive legionella samples. Sample media and transport means for dental, critical, and emergency potable water analysis must be provided by the contractor.

Samples taken or analyzed without the knowledge or approval of the VA POC will not be paid for. Failure to meet regulatory and policy requirements may also pose a risk.
